Mts. Noordam-ten Have combines modern arable farming with a strong focus on quality, sustainability, and future-oriented entrepreneurship. Following the acquisition of the former Koop-Landbouw site in Usquert, the company initiated a large-scale renovation project, including the modernization of its cold storage facilities.
The existing refrigeration system, installed in 1991, had reached the end of its service life. Geerlofs Refrigeration was commissioned to design and install an energy-efficient refrigeration system that is ready for the future and fully aligned with Noordam-ten Have’s sustainable vision.
Given the scale of the project, two natural refrigerants were considered for the new installation: CO₂ and ammonia (NH₃). Based on a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis, an NH₃ pump recirculation system proved to be the most cost-effective and future-proof solution.
In addition to lower energy consumption, ammonia refrigeration systems typically offer a longer service life. As a result, maintenance and depreciation costs are generally lower than those of comparable CO₂ systems. Since the cold stores are primarily used for the storage of winter carrots, where a high relative humidity is essential, the NH₃ pump system combined with hot gas defrosting is ideally suited to this application.
In mid-2026, Geerlofs Refrigeration started the installation of the new refrigeration system serving six large cold storage rooms. The Gispro control system will provide fully integrated control, monitoring, visualization, and data registration. The 2026 harvest will be stored under optimal conditions thanks to this state-of-the-art refrigeration installation.
